Bird watching and survey
Riparian corridors have many specific ecosystems
functions. One of these is that they often serve as migratory pathways for
birds. Songbirds have often been shown to use riparian forest more extensively
than other forest due to the concentration of food and cover.
This is the case for Stoney Creek, where the functional riparian zone provides
some of the only green space in the area. Members of SCEC have been watching
the birds which frequent the area for many years. By watching and recording the
birds year round, it is hoped to discover those important areas for feeding and
nesting.
There are 30 bird observations stations accross Stoney Creek watershed. Since
1996 a master list has been compiled with a total of 79 different species
recorded. This list is continually up-dated.
