Mapping Stoney Creek
One of the greatest challenges to stream habitat
evaluation for many community groups is finding accurate records giving the
location of the main stream and it's tributaries. Sometimes the information
exists, but is scattered in several locations, and contains conflicting
information. At other times, the information does not exist. Our group decided
to work in two scales 1:20K and 1:2K. This is due to the availability of
thematic information in these scales.
The interaction of the main stream and its tributaries with the adjacent
landscape are crucial to maintain the overall integrity of a watershed,
including water quality and water quantity.
Between 1998 and 2002, a series of mapping projects occurred on the tributaries
of Stoney Creek, some of which were initiated by SCEC:
1998/1999 - British Columbia Institute of Technology,
1998 - SCEC tributaries Survey
1999 - SCEC tributaries Survey
2000 - ENKON watercourse classification
2001 - SCEC tributaries survey
2002 - SCEC tributaries SHIM mapping

In order to protect the sustainability of Stoney Creek as a result of impeding
development within the watershed and specifically the headwaters of the creek,
we are faced with the following challenges:
A- Seek ways to gather mapping, water quality, hydrology, riparian and land
cover data, before during and after the development period.
B - Provide data to others and engage them in collaborative planning and
implementation of activities that will maximize the required natural functions
for the ecological sustainability values of the watershed.
